CCE at the Gardner

These courses are run in partnership with the University of Sussex, centre for Continuing Education as part of their Open Courses. They are designed to provide accessible and local opportunities to study at higher education level with a supportive and expert tutor. Open courses carry higher education credit, which can be a stepping-stone to University of Sussex certificates, diplomas and degrees.

PERSPECTIVES ON ENVIRONMENTAL ART

with Simon Pascoe & Caitlin Easterby of Red Earth
Tue 9 Jan – Tue 27 Mar 7pm – 9.30pm

Course also includes two practical outdoor field sessions on Sat 3 Feb and Sat 17 Mar

Red Earth explores the artists’ response to the environment and ecological issues – from ancient animist cultures to contemporary environmental sculpture, ritual performance, landscape gardening and green architecture.

PAINTING WORKSHOP – STILL LIFE

with Tom Benjamin – 4 consecutive Saturdays
Sat 3 Feb – Sat 24 Feb 10am – 4pm 2007

This course will use still life as a way of understanding a broad range of approaches to depiction. The course will aim to help students to develop and enrich their individual art practice through the introduction of technical issues and current and previous practises.

GETTING INTO JAZZ – BEGINNERS

A course aimed at musicians who have little or no experience of playing jazz but who want a grounding in the elements of improvisation, rhythm, melody and harmony.

A course for the musician with some basic experience of playing jazz – ideal for those who have completed the beginner’s course and who want to study the music in greater depth.

JAZZ BAND WORKSHOP: A GROUNDING IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

A workshop aimed at musicians who are experienced improvisers and who wish to develop their knowledge in a practical setting

LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP

We work from the life model using a variety of poses, to search for form through the activity of drawing, suitable for both beginners and experienced students.

POETRY WORKSHOP

A number of imaginative workshop exercises encourage you to broaden and deepen your writing skills. Through discussion of published texts we explore the various styles and schools within contemporary poetry.

STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

Explore the craft of the storyteller. Using story skills, stagecraft, voice, gesture and movement, learn how to tell affective and dramatic stories.

WRITING FOR STAGE AND RADIO: FIRST IDEAS TO FIRST DRAFTS

Write a first draft of a play for stage or radio in a mutually supportive group. We focus on the practicalities of play writing as well as the development and expression of individual ideas in different media.
